A common Spleen problem is insufficient Yang energy. Spleen Yang deficiency often comes with the Yang deficiency of the Stomach as well. As a result, one may experience coldness in the Stomach, abdominal pain, abdominal distension, diarrhea, vomiting, and coldness of the limbs. For example, one cannot drink cold milk or ice water, otherwise diarrhea may occur. The abdominal pain can be alleviated after the abdomen is pressed with hands or covered with a warm water bag.
Fu Zi Li Zhong Tang is a very popular Chinese herbal medicine used to reinforce the Yang energy of the Spleen and Stomach. This Chinese medicine is composed of several herbs that strengthen the Yang energy and the Spleen. Among them, Processed Aconite Root is perhaps the best-known Chinese herb for restoring the Yang energy and dispersing Cold. Ginger is acrid and warm in nature and disperses Cold. Codonopsis replenishes the Qi energy and harmonizes the Spleen. Atractylodes is a key tonic for the Spleen and Stomach and removes Dampness. Licorice tonifies Spleen and Qi and synchronizes the action of the other herbs.
Fu Zi Li Zhong Wan is indicated in China Pharmacopoeia1 for warming the middle-Jiao and strengthening the Spleen. The Chinese herb is used for the insufficiency and coldness of the Spleen and Stomach, abdominal pain and coldness, vomiting and diarrhea, cold hands and feet. †
In recent years, Fu Zi Li Zhong Wan has been studied for its application to digestive disorders such as gastritis, enteritis, and gastric ulcers that are diagnosed with modern technologies and at the mean time display the described TCM patterns with satisfactory results.† For example, in one study, Fu Zi Li Zhong Tang was used as the basic TCM formula to treat 28 patients with a history of gastric ulcer or peptic ulcer between 3 months to 20 years. After 1 month of treatment, 24 out of 28 were clinically recovered.2† In the study, Astragalus, a common Qi tonic Chinese herb, and Angelica, a known Blood tonic herb, were included to the classic Fu Zi Li Zhong Tang herbal formula.
